Overview

Project Lantern is a modular gamma spectroscopy platform: segmented scintillator modules, a common digitiser backplane, and an analysis pipeline that treats calibration as part of the measurement rather than an afterthought.

The point of the modularity is boring and important. A module can be swapped, recalibrated and returned to the array in an afternoon, which means the array can keep running while individual channels are being understood.

This paragraph is placeholder text. Replace it with the real motivation for the project and the measurement it is ultimately meant to enable.

Objectives

  • A low, stable backgroundCharacterised background at the target energy range, with a documented budget by source.
  • Channel-to-channel consistencyCalibration drift tracked continuously and corrected within a stated bound.
  • A single reproducible pipelineAcquisition, calibration and reduction released as one versioned package.
  • Hardware other groups can buildModule drawings, bill of materials and firmware published under an open licence.

Approach

Detector modules

Placeholder text describing the crystal, light guide and photosensor choice, the module housing, and how each unit is characterised before it joins the array.

Readout and trigger

Placeholder text describing the digitiser chain, trigger logic and how timing between modules is established and monitored.

Calibration and reduction

Placeholder text describing the calibration sources, the cadence, and how drift corrections propagate through the reduction pipeline into the released data.

Have a problem that needs an instrument built around it?

We take on a small number of collaborations and sponsored projects each year, alongside the work we fund ourselves.
